Smif N Wessun Press Release! Use the media to your advantage!

I recently brought you an article on the Monumental 5, they were 5 victims of police brutality in New York following the album release of Smif N Wessun. Yesterday July 7th, Pete Rock and General Steele(Smif N Wessun) spoke out at a press conference at New York City Hall.

I will post the link so you can read the official press release from both organizations. What I like is the usage of the media to convey there point. You can’t expect change and not want to speak out about it. It has to reach outside of the neighborhood to have more of a profound impact. I say this for this can happen anywhere. I don’t need to post the entire link like before you need to read this, but through this wonderful world of social media one of the Monumental 5 say my page. I plan on working with him in the future, to possible to some interviews.

A couple of stats from the press release though

According to the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union]: In 2010 alone, NYPD officers made over half a million stops, 85 percent of which targeted people of color. The reason given by NYPD for what are called “stop-and-frisk” activities were guns. In all of these cases, however, less than 0.2 percent of “stop-and-frisk” resulted in guns being found.

According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund: Blacks and Latinos represent over 90% of all citywide trespass arrests on NYCHA [New York City Housing Authority] property although we make up only 54% of the New York City population.

  1. Unfortunately, the society we live in, doesn't reflect and isn't one that accepts, believes in, nor encourages racial/social equality. the political bodies and personnel that lead our governmental departments are content with the stalemate our country remains in; one of misfortune and unfair recognition to the races of color, unless there's something in it for them (wealthy people, political offices, governmental bodies). In which case one would have to have a large money support or at least some sort of connection to it. The needs/concerns/wants of the wealthy will be addressed and resolved first and foremost. This is why "ricardo" and "jamal" getting pulled over is a regular thing, while "evan" has yet to be stopped. sucks but it probably won't change soon.
