Been watching college sports on ESPN classics this past week and one thing I noticed was the black players. I wondered why more black athletes do not attend HBCU’s(Historically Black College/University) . Is it because they would not receive the notoriety they receive at other institutions? If Tyrell Pryor attended Fort Valley State I bet no one would care.
The movie He Got Game directed by Spike Lee comes to mind, I actually know an athlete or two that attend top tier schools and from their stories it’s not that far off. These schools turn blind eyes to athletes reckless behavior(ask the Duke lacrosse team), lack of attends, and scholarly cheating unless you are black. Then you are the a stain on the pristine legacy of that particular institution, so why not make yourself at home with you own people.
If you took all the top black athletes from around the country and they only attended HBCU’s, a great deal of scouts and media attention would have to turn to these schools and the institution grows. Let’s be frank collegiate sports is a business.
At the end of the day the one of the biggest hustlers in the country is the NCAA. They make billions of dollars yearly and the players do not receive what they should.( Ask the Fab 5) I say this loosely, the athletes do receive scholarships but if your face is used to sell thousands of jerseys a year you should receive something. The NCAA makes all this money and splits it with administration and coaches which they should be compensated, but it seems like a modern form of being an indentured servant.
Crazy but true... Ncaa makin damn millions but cant pay these kids food or room and board.. Damn shame...
