Help Save Troy Davis

The execution of Troy Davis is set to September 21 2011. The Chatham County District Attorney Larry Chisolm, who asked a judge to issue Troy's death warrant, can also ask the judge to take it back.  At the bottom is a link that you can help petition. Many people as well as myself believe that this man in innocent.

      Keep these things in mind…

· All but two of the original witnesses against Troy Davis have signed affidavits recanting their earlier testimony. Most claim that their testimony was coerced by police officers.
· Multiple witnesses say that another man—one of the original witnesses against Davis—has claimed to have slain the fallen officer.
· The weapon used in the murder was never found. The only physical evidence connecting Davis to the crime was indirect, circumstantial—and new testimony disputes Davis’s connection to that evidence.
· Due to legal technicalities, the new evidence never got a new hearing at trial, only an evidentiary hearing. The judge at that hearing admitted that the case against Davis was not “ironclad.”
· Troy was never granted a new trial – only an evidentiary hearing at which he was called upon to prove his “actual innocence,” an undefined legal standard that far exceeds the “reasonable doubt” bar that prosecutors had to hurdle in the original trial.
· The court system is known to make mistakes and sentence innocent people for crimes they didn’t commit. It’s very difficult to undo those mistaken sentences, which is why the Board of Pardons and Parole exists. It acts as a last stand when the courts make errors.
· In 2007, the Georgia Board of Pardons stated that it would not allow any execution to proceed where there was any doubt about the guilt of the prisoner.
· Point to the case of Cameron Todd Willingham, who was executed for a crime it now appears he did not commit. The Innocence Project also has many resources on exonerated death row inmates.
· Call on the Board to grant clemency and to commute the death sentence of Troy Davis.
